From SewWiki from Beginner Sewing

Jump to: navigation, search

Beginner Sewing started as a supplement to a class I was teaching. I coded up a bunch of static web pages to go along with the class, and posted them on the internet. After teaching for a few years, I moved, which meant a temporary end to my teaching in-person classes. I sorely missed teaching!

I created SewWiki to help people learn to sew and find sewing resources. I decided to base it on MediaWiki, which is the engine that Wikipedia is based on. My hope is that new sewers will be able to ask questions and get help through the discussion pages, and that more advanced sewers will help contribute to the content. I've created a directory of fabric stores in my local area, and I'd like to encourage everyone to add their local shops!

Feel free to use the "+" tab to leave me a message on my talk page - I'd love to hear from you!

Happy Sewing,

Shannon

[edit] Hi shannon

Hi Shannon, I really like your site.

Kind regards, Brodaigh

Hi Brodaigh!

Thanks for your comment - I'm glad you like the site! I'm working on adding content, but I definitely meant for everyone to be able to contribute - that's why I chose a wiki format for the site. The more people that add to the site, the better it will be.

If you'd like to help, adding a page with your local fabric shops, and a word about them, would be very much appreciated. Or if you're more ambitious, any content related to sewing is definitely welcome.

Thanks!

Shannon

Sure! I'd be happy to add some things.

I agree- the more people the better.

Best wishes, Brodaigh

Shannon, O.k I tried to create a page straight stitch by making the link on your pj lesson page, that worked fine, when I tried to save the new page, I received these errors;

Warning: UtfNormal::loadData() [function.loadData]: open_basedir restriction in effect. File(/usr/share/pear/UtfNormalData.inc) is not within the allowed path(s): (/home/httpd/vhosts/beginnersewing.com/httpdocs:/tmp) in /home/httpd/vhosts/beginnersewing.com/httpdocs/w/includes/normal/UtfNormal.php on line 224

Warning: UtfNormal::loadData(UtfNormalData.inc) [function.loadData]: failed to open stream: Operation not permitted in /home/httpd/vhosts/beginnersewing.com/httpdocs/w/includes/normal/UtfNormal.php on line 224

Fatal error: UtfNormal::loadData() [function.require]: Failed opening required 'UtfNormalData.inc' (include_path='/home/httpd/vhosts/beginnersewing.com/httpdocs/w:/home/httpd/vhosts/beginnersewing.com/httpdocs/w/includes:/home/httpd/vhosts/beginnersewing.com/httpdocs/w/languages:.:/usr/share/pear') in /home/httpd/vhosts/beginnersewing.com/httpdocs/w/includes/normal/UtfNormal.php on line 224

It may have something to do with permissions but I really have no idea. Check the file UtfNormal.php on line 224, and that should lead you to the problem. If you have scintilla text editor or similar that will help.

I'll try again in a couple of days.

Kind regards, Brodaigh

[edit] Trouble posting...

Hi Brodaigh!

I tried creating another user, logging in as that user, and saving edits to the Straight Stitch page you created. (Which is a really good idea by the way! :) ) It seemed to work OK. The only thing I can think of is maybe it's the formatting or certain characters in the content you're trying to save?

Could you try just changing a word or two on the page, then saving it? If that works it'll help narrow down the problem.

Thanks - let me know how you make out!

Shannon

Hi Shannon,

Good idea putting in the heading! My test worked. Straight stitch is now defined as "test". It still didn't work when I described Straight Stitch though ): Maybe it doesnt like my descripton.(: It must be because I copied and pasted it out of my wiki, there was no strange characters or anything though. Maybe if you told Mediawiki and they could maybe work out a way to handle the error. ie, rendering a message to the user.

kind regards, Brodaigh

Follow up;It worked fine when i manually typed it in.

[edit] Copying from another wiki

Hi Brodaigh!

Yes, that's probably it - different wiki engines have different markup, so if your wiki isn't MediaWiki-based you'll have to convert the markup before being able to post it. There are different utilities out there for converting wiki mark-up - I actually used one to convert my HTML pages to MediaWiki markup. You're right though, it would definitely be nice if MediaWiki displayed a more understandable error message.

Out of curiosity, what is your sewing wiki's url?

Thanks!

Shannon

Hi Shannon,

1)Yes, but I didnt copy the markup I copied straight text.

2)Sure, the url is modiste.org I have alot of refactoring to do, a few improvements need to be made. It runs on Dokuwiki.

Regards,

Brodaigh

Shannon, I'm really sorry. Silly me put straight stitch on this page also and therefore a different namespace. You'd think I'd know better. I deleted it and it seems Alan Put in a description on the intended page. Umm. Is straight stitch basting or is it the same as running stitch?

Regards,

Brodaigh

[edit] Straight Stitch vs running stitch

Hi Brodaigh!

A running stitch is a kind of straight stitch, so your page was right on except that I'd call it a running stitch instead of a straight stitch. A running stitch is sewn by hand only, while a straight stitch can be sewn either on a machine or by hand. Basting by hand is a kind of running stitch - basically the same thing, but with really long stitches so it can be taken out easily.

Hope this helps!

Shannon

HI again! Thanks alot for clearing that up. Yes, it does help.

So...What did you think? (the url)

Kind regards, Brodaigh

Hello again!

I really like the look & feel of your site - it looks very easy to use. I've been second-guessing my choice of wiki engines - I'm worried the MediaWiki engine may be a little confusing to people who haven't used it before. I had thought DocuWiki didn't support images, but it looks like you've got some really nice illustrations on the stitches page. It looks like you do a lot more hand sewing than me - I do most of my sewing on a machine! :)

Shannon

Shannon, Thank you for your comment. I really like your wiki because you are a teacher.

If you do decide to change to dokuwiki I would be happy to help (if I can)if you have any questions:)

I changed the name by the way to Modiste Wiki; the other name was really stupid:]

Also, Would you mind terribly if I put a link to your wiki as a sister site or somth'n?

Oh and I'm too lazy or impatient to hand stitch and besides, i can never find a needle; had to start somewhere.:]

Regards, Brodaigh

Hi Brodaigh!

Thanks for asking about the link - you're definitely more than welcome to link to my site. And I totally know what you mean about hand stitching - machine sewing is just so much faster! I can still hear my first teacher's voice in my head though, talking me into taking the time to hand stitch certain hems, zippers and other things!

Shannon

Hey! Thanks, I've put your link in the sidebar!

Yes, Time, it is too scarce, unfortunately! She probably makes a good point though and thats why you cant get it of your head. Right?

Brodaigh

Shannon,

I'm getting the same error that your user reported earlier. I think I know what's happening: the page can't handle the fancy double quote character. I tried it on your page and it failed exactly the same way it does on mine, same line number and everything. We both have "open base directories" enabled on our dedicated Linux hosting server. I'm still looking at why it's a problem on our system but not on my (windows) laptop or on my other hosting accounts.

Can you tell me what version of Mediawiki you're running, whether you're running on a Linux host, and whether you're on a dedicated host or running in a hosted environment. It's a major problem for me. But... I think I have a way to get around the problem. I'd like to hear from you!

Hello,

That's interesting to know that you have the same problem. I'm running MediaWiki 1.8.2 on a Linux server (I think) in a hosted environment. I'm going to try upgrading to the latest version of MediaWiki to see if that solves it...

Shannon

Where are you Shannon? Ive been dropping into recent changes, are you on holidays?

[edit] Working again

Hello!

LOL, quite the opposite of holidays! I've been working again full-time, so I haven't had much time for my web sites. (I'm a software tester so things get very busy near a release date.)

Hopefully things will slow down again in a few weeks, and I'll have more time to update the site...
